Today, Chlumsky's not kissing Mac, but she shares a starring role in Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain with Christina Ricci. Chlumsky plays Jody Salerno, a 13 year old tomboy with a hard home life , but much enthusiasm and energy to search for hidden treasures. Ricci plays Beth Easton, a city girl unhappy with her new surrounding - "the sticks" - she calls them, until she meets Jody. They are opposities, but form an instantaneous friendship.
While auditioning for Gold Diggers, Chlumsky and Ricci had a meeting with the producers. "They asked us which roles we wanted." Anna explained. "I said 'Jody', and Christina said 'Beth'. Originally the producers had us in mind for the opposite roles, but they made no contradictions to what we said, and things worked out pretty well."
Since, Ricci is "popping up" in movie after movie, naturally, I asked Chlumsky if she'd like to stay that busy. She replied, "I really don't like to do back-to-back movies. Christina has the energy and can do that. I concentrate on things at home. My family and school life are important to me. I try to do one movie a year."
Is Chlumsky a tomboy in real life? "Absolutely not. I'm growing my hair long now. I like it better that way," she said.
Does Chlumsky have a special boyfriend? "No, " she said, "but there's definitely time for that later on."
What does Chlumsky, a talented young actress, want to be when she grows up? "A biologist, or zoologist," she said. ( In the background I heard sirens and asked Chlumsky if she was O.K.) "Yeah, that's just Chicago, always sirens going. Anyway, I spent last summer working at the Museum of Natural History here - classifiing fish. I just love animals!" she exclaimed.
And fish aren't the only things she works with. Chlumsky's mother is also an actress and she acted in the play "Fiddler on the Roof" with her mom last year. "It was lots of fun working with my mom. I really enjoyed it." she mentioned.
In closing, Chlumsky told me, " I want to give the theme song for Gold Diggers a plug - it's called "The Flying Song" and it's terrific!
Go see the Gold Digger movie, listen for the "Flying Song", and watch Anna's terrific performance. She's very convincing.
