Scott, brother of acclaimed director Ridley Scott, has risen from the art house genre to an acclaimed director of box-office "event" pictures. Born on June 21, 1944 in Newcastle, England, Scott began his career (like his brother) in TV commercials, before he went on to direct the stylish (and brainless) vampire flick, The Hunger (1983).

He hit box-office gold with his next picture, the air force pilot story Top Gun (1986), a hit vehicle for Scott and star Tom Cruise. A string of hit-or-miss action pictures followed in the wake of Top Gun. The ludicrous sequel Beverly Hills Cop II (1987); The second Cruise-Scott collaboration Days of Thunder (1990); And the repulsively sleazy Revenge (1990). He started to make a slow but steady comeback, with the ultra-hip, pulp fiction cult classic drama, True Romance (1993). He scored again with Crimson Tide (1995), which did for submarine dramas what Top Gun did for jet pilot action flicks.
