Joel Schumacher

November 11, 1996

Schumacher has a long range of film work he's directed, mostly for the Hollywood mainstream. Born in New York, 1939, he began work as a set designer and screenwriter. His notable screenplays include Car Wash (1976) and The Wiz (1978). His debut as a director came with the feminist spoof of B-movies, The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981) with Lily Tomlin. His follow-up work has ranged from "Brat Pack" vehicles like St. Elmo's Fire (1985), to comic-book spectaculars like Batman Forever (1995).

His best work includes the violent social satire Falling Down (1993), the John Grisham adaptations The Client (1994) and A Time to Kill (1996) and the romatic comedy Cousins (1989). His next project is the new Batman film, intitled Batman and Robin (1997). Most of Schumacher's films, though heavily barraged by critics, have gone on to make zillions of dollars worth of profits. Even if he seems to know nothing of plot and character development, he does know how to put on a pretty good show.

My rating on a scale of 1 to 10: 6
