Ivan Reitman
June 2, 1997
Reitman, born in Czechoslovakia in 1946, is mostly known as a director of comedies. Any time he has attempted to try films other than comedies, such as the legal drama Legal Eagles (1986), they have tanked. Reitman's family immigrated to Canada when he was very young. It was in Canada that he got his start in the film industry. Reitman produced features for horror maestro David Cronenberg, as well as comedy variety shows for people like Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. His first American production came in 1978, when he helped produce the smash hit comedy Animal House (1978).
With minor cult hits like Meatballs (1979) and Stripes (1981) under his directorial belt, Reitman scored his biggest commercial success with the riotously funny Ghostbusters (1984), which successfully combined comedy and fantasy-horror elements. Little success has followed Reitman in the wake of the popular film. He has had small gems like Twins (1988) and Dave (1993), but action fluff like Kindergarten Cop (1990) and the Robin Williams-Billy Crystal vanity production Father's Day (1997).
