I've written about Sam Raimi's movies before, but I've never talked much about the man. Born in 1959, Raimi's film roots date back to making 8mm fantasy shorts. He first gained attention at the Cannes Film Festival in 1983 with the outrageously gory Evil Dead, which went on to become an international cult movie. Raimi followed it up with the even grosser (yet more humorous), Evil Dead 2 (1987). Some of his traits include slapstick comedy, wild camera angles and bizarre surrealism.

His first mainstream film, the comic-book like Darkman (1990), was a surprise box-office hit that gained a wider audience for Raimi. His most recent work has been the Second sequel to Evil Dead, Army of Darkness (1993) and the western spoof, The Quick and the Dead (1995). He has frequently worked with the equally weird Coen Brothers (Joel and Ethan), as a screenwriter for the brothers Hudsucker Proxy (1994) and as a director for the Coen screenplay, Crimewave (1985). Though Raimi does tend to over-do it on his film projects, he has a great sense of humor and a uniquely mad perspective of the world around him.

My rating on a scale of 1 to 10: 7
