Neil Jordan

March 10, 1997

Irish director Neil Jordan was born in 1950. He began his work in films when he became script consultant to the John Boorman fantasy, Excalibur (1981). The next year, he made his directing debut with the low-budget Danny Boy (1982). The first film to gain him international attention was Mona Lisa (1986), a tale of violence and romance; two themes which would be prominent in his later work.

After the failures of his Hollywood period, the debacle High Spirits and the Robert De Niro vehicle We're No Angels, Jordan went back to England to produce his own creative work. In 1992, he returned to prominence with the mysterious The Crying Game. Notorious for it's well-kept secret, it was nominated for six Academy Awards and won a Oscar for Jordan's screenplay. His recent films include the adaptation of Anne Rice's vampire novel, Interview With the Vampire (1994) and the epic-scale biopic, Michael Collins (1996), about the infamous IRA founder.
