And now for someone completely differant. Jarmusch came from the same New York university that nurtured such famed director talents as Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese. Jarmusch, born in 1953, first enrolled in Columbia University in 1971. Before his graduation, he went to Paris and discovered the visual treasure of Cinematheque Francais. He returned to New York, graduated and enrolled in the graduate film program at NYU. He became a teaching assistant to director Nicholas Ray (Rebel Without A Cause). Jarmusch's first work in film, with the help of mentor Ray, was a production assistant on German director Wim Wenders' tribute to Ray and his work.

Next, Jarmusch worked on a short film, shot over a weekend, which becamme Stranger Than Paradise in 1984. With it's gritty cool and comic tone, the film won the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. His subsequent work have been the gritty, dirty worlds of Down By Law (1986), Mystery Train (1989) and Night on Earth (1991). He has also developed the acting bug, co-starring in such films like Aki Kaurismaki's Leningrad Cowboys and Wayne Wang's Blue in the Face. He has a tendency to go for the deprssing side of life, and yet he adds his own comical, optimistic touchs to the movie he's working on.
