Walter Hill

May 26, 1997

Hill is considered by some the heir of Sam Peckinpah, mainly because many of his features are full of ultraviolence and ultraviolent characters. Hill's work has mostly been paltry imitations of Peckinpah. Born in 1940, his first films (the depression-era feature Hard Times (1975) and The Driver (1978)) lead to his work on the cult features The Warriors (1979), The Long Riders (1980) and Southern Comfort (1981).

His big break came with the hard-boiled action-comedy, 48 Hrs. (1982), which helped make a star out of Eddie Murphy. Much of Hill's work since then has been touch-and-go, from the visually sumptuous Streets of Fire (1984) and the tense Trespass (1992), to the narcissistic sequel Another 48 Hrs. (1990) and dull epic westerns like Geronimo (1993) and Wild Bill (1995).

My rating on a scale of 1 to 10: 6
