Edwards is probably most well-known for his Pink Panther series, starring Peter Sellers as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau. Edwards was born William Blake Edwards on July 26, 1922, in Tulsa. He began acting and writing screenplays in Hollywood during the 1940's. His directorial debut was in 1955, with the trite comedy, Bring Your Smile Along. He first gained notice with the sea comedy, Operation Petticoat (1959) and the adaptation of Truman Capote's Novella, Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), starring Audrey Hepburn. He hit it big however when he capitalized on the success of The Pink Panther (1964), something that was credited more to Sellers brilliant comedic skills than it was for Edwards' directing.

Since then, however, he has gone into a major career slump as a director, with only occasional boosts from the Panther series in the 1970's and S.O.B. (1981) and Victor/Victoria (1982) in the 80's. One of the causes of his slump is his constant disputes with the Hollywood system and his failure to make movies that are more modern, instead of stories that are stuck in th 40's and 50's. He's okay as a director, but as it appears in the film business, OK just doesn't cut it.
