Born in Waikanae, New Zealand in 1954, Jane Campion has emerged as one of the greatest women filmakers in the world. Her career in films started with a succesful string of short films in the 1980's, followed by her first feature film Sweetie (1989), a dark study of mental breakdown. She followed that up with the biography of New Zealand poet-novelist, Janet Frame, An Angel at my Table (1990). Her most acclaimed film to date, 1993's The Piano, continues a series of stories about strong women characters who, in the stories, are thought to be crazy by the people around them. Occasionally, they really are. However, most of the time, they appear to be a lot more intelligent than some of the so-called "sane" people. To make a long story short, Campion is a brilliant film poet, and I hope to see more of her work in the future.
