Ingmar Bergman
September 2, 1996
Considered one of the great masters of cinema, Bergman was born Uppsala, Sweden on July 14, 1918. His early films from the 1950's were masterpieces when it came to telling stories, by way of his beautiful images. Such cases include Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), Wild Strawberries (1957), The Seventh Seal (1957) and The Virgin Spring (1959). His later works, Persona (1966), Cries and Whispers (1973) and Autumn Sonata (1978) paid closer attention to the stories involved, which were filled with philosophical metaphors and brilliant characterization.
After a career that spanned nearly 35 years, he decided that the stunning family epic, Fanny and Alexander (1983), would be his swan song. It was not his last film to date (that would come a year later), but it should be considered a fitting end to a long and lustrious career in cinema.
