MOVIES IN THEATERS

This movie is one of the most romantic films i have seen in years. It is another one of Johnny Depp's living-on-the-edge films. It's the story of a man who thinks he is the world's greatest Lover (Depp). He is handed over to a psychiatrist (Marlon Brando) to find out who he really is.

However, Depp starts to bring love back into Brando's life and to rediscover his youth with his wife(Faye Dunaway). The three leads are terrific, especially Brando in his first good film in years. The chemistry between Dunaway and Brando is also great but not as good as between Brando and Depp. This is the type of film to bring a date to for a good time and I think this movie will introduce a new generation to the one and only Marlon Brando. This film is pure romance all the way through.

VIDEOS TO RENT

These are three of my favorite films now out on video cassette and/or laserdisc.

She's Gotta Have It (1986)

This film was the very first "Spike Lee Joint". It's the story of a young black woman who has three men in her life and must chose which one is the right man for her. The film is mostly in black and white, with one scene in color, and the technical aspects are good. The acting isn't anything hot, but Lee's script keeps things going along anyway.

The film stars Tracy Camilla Johns as the "She" of the title. Tommy Redmond Hicks plays the most sensitive of the three men. John Canada Terrell plays her upper class boyfriend who is a stuffed shirt and snob. Spike Lee, the director, has the most funny performance of the three. This character, Mars Blackmon, is a street wise guy from Harlem, who is considered a little annoying by the other characters. Lee would later put this character to use in Nike commercials and the cult popularity of this film got him more chances to direct the things he wanted to direct. This film is a long way from Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X, but it is a good start.

Death Wish (1974)

This is the granddaddy of Rambo and the Terminator. The film stars Charles Bronson as a businessman who turns vigilante when his wife is killed and his daughter raped. He hunts the streets of New York looking for muggers and rapists and shooting them on the spot.

This, altogether, isn't a bad movie for the action fans, but is not for the squeamish. There are graphic, hyperviolent scenes of rape and murder in here that might have a dramatic impact on people. This is not a great film but surely an interesting film which makes you think about vigilantism and the consequences. There is way to much violence in here that makes you think that New York is a horrible place to live. But, this city does not seem like the New York of 1974, but a futuristic violent world right out of an Anthony Burgess novel. Bronson does make a good transformation from a businessman to a vigilante.

Death Wish 2 (1982)

When I rented this video one night, I was very sorry for doing it. This is nowhere near as good as the first film. In the first one, Charles Bronson played a businessman-turned-vigilante quite convincingly. But, in the second one, it seems there is no point to his turning vigilante again. His daughter (who survived in the first film), is kidnapped, raped and killed by L.A. muggers, so he turns into a vigilante again and goes on a violent manhunt through the city of Los Angeles.

You will also regret seeing this and will be disappointed by it if you saw the first one and liked it. Bronson acts like a robot in a lot of his films, but at least he displayed some emotion in the first film. Here he's a robot all the way. Do yourself a favor and don't see it. You will have saved about four bucks.
