My Father

by

Walter Elwood Worden

I saw him last as I had left him
fading to shadow toward twilight
far across the cindered yard
where the deisel locomotive rested
near the roundhouse on siding rails.
Up to the cab he heaved himself
wrapped in scarves of smoke and steam
that rose to twist and turn in and out
the rods and wheels to fail
at last on feshening breeze.

He did not wave, nor I
neither of us knowing then
the quickness of a moment's breadth
that Time would bend itself to shape
like smoke upon the wind.
