Implosion

by

Talkin' to a friend last night on the phone
Monsoon clouds all black and blue
Gets a little too real when you're livin' alone
Mail just comes when the bills are due

Sometimes you hide in music, crank it up loud
Gotta drive the demons from your head
Wonder how it feels to be a part of the crowd
Damn it's lonely in that king-size bed

Craving the touch of another human voice
Search for echoes in your own brain
It seems that everyone else was given a choice
You were left alone to bear the pain

Helicopters overhead bring up your crazy days
Or is it gunshots on the TV next door?
Thinking how lucky you were to barely slip away
Still feeling those shadows from the war

Tried to find a girlfriend, she just wouldn't stay
Never bothered to give a reason why
Typical woman, guess they all disappear someday
Sure did hurt when your spirit died

You crash out early, about eight thirty or nine
Set the clock for dawn's first rays
Nightmares awaiting to burden your fragile mind
Small wonder your eyes look so glazed

Black coffee and cigarettes, another day in hell
Listen to the foreman ride your ass
Workin' all day long to avoid that little cell
Still those twelve-hour shifts go fast

That old man across the street died yesterday
Missing your one true friend
You know he wouldn’t want you to feel this way
As if this life could ever end_

Implosion: Her Story

by

Nineteen months of marriage, the pain still gets her down
Surfacing in moments of distraction
All of a sudden she looks, and rain is pourin’ on the ground
Days and nights without interaction

Sex toys, videos, datelines, she died for a week or two
Her pillowcase soaked up all those tears
None of her friends bothered to call when the baby was due
The anaesthetic didn't numb her fears

Her parents' twentieth anniversary, she made it almost to the day
I know some who might call that extreme
Life’s too short, why settle down, love ‘em once, toss it away
Happiness don’t exist outside your dreams

So_, clean house, feed the baby, grab a nap, do her chores
Damn, she’d love to go back in time
Wake up around noon, smoke a joint, cruise all the stores
Now she’s doin’ everything short of crime

Thirty hours a week for lousy tips, enough to feed the rage
A noblewoman lives here, right next door
I often tease her, sayin’ that ladies don’t show their age
Reminds me of someone I knew before

Too much cash in divorce court, but she just had to break free
We never see it coming ‘til it’s gone
After such a bloody scene, she managed to keep her sanity
The one thing she can’t do is live alone

Her mother gave a shoulder when the storm was comin’ down
She really needed somewhere to hide
Hate to think what might’ve happened if no one had been around
No loving arms to hold her when she cried?

Sunday morning she’s at home, Allman Brothers on the air
Recovery’s kind of slow, but she’ll get through
I can see her on the patio with a breeze inside her hair
Eventually she may come back to start anew_

Implosion: Trilogy

by

Sam Wilson

So, the rain’s been fallin’ down for a long, long year
Nothing, it seems, ever changes anymore
We’re all caught up inside of ourselves around here
Makes it kind of hard to find the door

Watchin’ other people as they’re fishin’ on the lake
Get lost for a while in meditation
Sailboats and seagulls, damn it’s nice to have a break
From your own social isolation

Did she see him first, or was it the other way around
Started talkin’ soon as they met
Suddenly neither one of them is feeling quite so down
But not too close, not just yet

Talked about the foundry, and that bar down the street
Where she worked most nights
Those big steel beams, and her poor tired, aching feet
And the money’s always tight

It went on to the war and nightmares that remained
About lovers in their past
How some things in life will drive you insane
Others just don’t seem to last

All this time their walls are slowly crumbling away
Noticing each other’s eyes
Seeing who lives behind the words that they say
Mirrors don’t tell any lies

He said something like, "It’s hard when you’re livin’ alone"
The undead are everywhere
She agreed, "All I have is my baby, and Mom on the phone"
Like to find one who cares

Next morning dawns, and something stirs deep inside
The waiting paid off in the end
Lookin’out the door at a sky so clear, blue and wide
All they needed was another friend_
