Tribute to a Tree

by

June Somerford Williamson

Beneath the boughs of my sugar maple tree
I sit serene,
Where there's nothing but its spreading limbs
And heaven in between.

It's my sanctuaray where each day I go
To shelter in its shade,
>From the mornings gentle rays
And evenings peaceful glow.

It's my thinking place,
My laughing place,
My all by myself alone place...
God's and my space.

My place to sit and soak up
All the pleasures of the garden
Where I've toiled and spade.
A peaceful resting place
Amongst its welcome shade.

It's hard to tell who's the older
Of us two, you see,
For we both creek as we bend,
My maple tree and me.

And if I should live to see the sad, sad day
When its stretching arms of friendship
Are no longer there to bend and sway,
I'll still be comforted by its cooling shade
Each time I close my eyes and reminisce
Of all the memories we have made.
