I Loved Because She Was the Brightest

by

Luke A. White

I loved because she was the brightest
Of all stars that pinned the sky,
And when I gazed, she was the lightest
Ray that always caught my eye.
I lived because I still could reckon
Her to be the utmost star,
And though I knew she'd never beckon,
I could love her from afar.
I lied to non; she was the fairest
Beauty of all beauties 'round,
And when she sang it was the fairest
Tune of any heavenly sound.
I died when she succumbed to sorrows,
Proving all my hopes a lie,
And now I know for all tomorrows
One fewer star will pin the sky.
