Shifting Downstream

by

Katherine T. West

Staring at tawdry facsimile of ourselves
afraid to see the rancorous truth.
Words awakened upon the page now lie still.
Sullen, flat shadows of themselves
A cruel, heartless death- gone for all time.

Shadows within disbelieving eyes--
Tears of ink staining our spent souls.
Screams of protest filed away in haste,
inaudible over the silent drone so familiar now.

Dishonored divas silenced in mid-song.
Virile Hands broken by arrogance and deceit.
Shattered promises stream away,
on the whimsical wind they drift
left alone, jaded and wronged.

Trembling hands grope around, feeling for life,
hunting for a reason but finding a rodent.
Pests approaching the cross roads...
We point and tap our way to hell.

Over before it started-- born before its time.

She Survived

by

Katherine T. West

She stood silently, watching the birds fly
Gliding upon gossamer wings of joy
There is no wild, unbridled fury here
A freedom that's foreign to some creatures

Caged by fear, shackled and shamed- powerless
An untamed spirit floating on the wind
A freedom that's never to be tasted
Those fearful, trapped souls yearning to soar free

To fly high, leaving every care behind
No more silent agony-- no more pain
Living within yesterday's shattered dreams
And the realization-- I have survived
