For Amelia

by

Daniel K. Wentzel

today
it hurt much more_
yesterday was okay!
itís finally sinking within
itís ouch!

all this
happened so fast
I really donít understand
whyíd it have to happen to me?
I pray_

begin
chemoí today
platelets for breakfast while
doctors prepare to place shunts in
my chest

fresh fruit?
no! not allowed!
and no fresh vegítables ...
and defínitely no fresh flowers
dear child
lest they carry germs through double-
duty shunts into your
immune system
wiped out_

harpist
gently playing Brahms Lullaby
welcoming new life to
a world in which
I cry

wish Iíd
broken my heart
girls survive broken hearts
all the time_ itís raining tears in
my head_

this is
what my heart says_
in toil, prayer and travail_
too many tears, not enough hugs
it hurts

Vacation Fantasies

by

Daniel K. Wentzel

awesome
peaks and valleys
searching for a new zeal
slowly my soul boards the plane to
my heart

stranger
I have known almost all my life
gently rests beside me
waits for me to
arrive
life flows again
within a timeless space
reaching out for untouchable
sweet rest

once more
I see the face I used to love
words she's longing to hear
begin to flow
with ease

Children

by

Daniel K. Wentzel

her smile
single teardrop
makes its way down her cheek
allow children to cry ... if they
want to
~
embrace
give them comfort
wipe away all their tears
sighs and cries pass over their lips
unheard
~
anguish
so well concealed
coming from a great depth
their unhappiness becoming
music
~
poems
unburdening
piercing soul and spirit
bound in the vellum of their hearts
written
~
these words
indelible
inscribed upon their mind
embalmed within their memory
its spice
~
a wreath
of bay laurel
like a mark of honour
bestowed upon poets, heroes ...
victors

~
Dedicated to Amelia Worth, Coos Bay, Oregon, USA
diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in January 2004

Laughter

by

Daniel K. Wentzel

Laughter
from the belly
releasing endorphins
relieving the pain in a heart
broken
only
for a moment
this temporal relief.
Once again the Weltschmerz returns
unheard...
Weltschmerz...
Who understands?
Who can deliver me?
When will this pain fully subside?
Depart...

Deidre Beatrice Harford

by

Daniel K. Wentzel

Sweet child
love of my life
Closing yesterday's doors
Embracing now... tomorrow is
today...

I hear
quiet breathing
as you lay beside me
And I wonder where your sweet dreams
take you...
wishing...
that if I could
I would be there with you
sharing all of my tender thoughts
with you

Can life
be this complex?
Please let's keep this simple!
you knowing me... me knowing you...
always ...
together, forever, with you
becoming complete we
remain lovers
my love

Timeless...
Speechless I lay...
And wondering just how
to make this moment last a while
longer...
trying...
desperately seeking, I watch
as the second arm ticks
one more minute
away

Walking the road less traveled

by

Daniel K. Wentzel

Walking
alone again...
The road less traveled
can be very lonely indeed
my love...
From soul mate to love's reprobate...
I just don't understand
your bitter and
your sweet...

Sorrowed
and resplendent...
Enchanting joy bringer
heal my heart of these earthly fears
today...

Love's Deceipt

by

Daniel K. Wentzel

Sorrowful and resplendent she arrives
Flaunting the wares of her twisted archives
Her seductive drink of prepared pleasure
Seeking a lonely, foolish heart's treasure

I have tasted her bitter and her sweet
Drunk from her cup of lies and foul deceit
The fall from soul mate to love's reprobate
Happens so fast that you will be too late_

To save yourself a painful severance
Comparable only with Death's nuance
Who can deliver me from this despair?
To walk again along that road so fair

How shall fate accomplish her destiny?
Shall there be grace or mercy, if any?

Eugene - a bus ride

by

Daniel K. Wentzel

darkness
slowly subsides
hope wells inside
fresh breeze... flowers looking so much
brighter

looking...
hidden faces
once concealed... now revealed
all of them looking beautiful...
today

seeing
mother and child...
young girl's reddest lipstick...
dear old lady smacking her lips
throughout

sunshine
filling my heart
traveling with its rays
on a free tour of life... I love
this place
