This Time of Year

by

Steve Trinward

This time of year we gather round with our families and friends
We bow our heads and pray for peace and goodwill to every man
Open hearts in grateful giving celebrate the joy of living
Letting go of prejudice and fear this time of year

This time of year we're reaching out to our loved ones near and far
We make the time to keep in touch with a phone call or a card
Exchanging gifts and season's greetings, Santa's lists and happy meetings
Filling up the holidays with cheer this time of year

The reasons for the celebration vary heart to heart
The birth of a Savior _ the solstice of the sun
A festival of sparkling lights ... a time of family fun
And all along we try our best to do _ our _ part
This time of year

This time of year let's make a pact to extend these days of love
We know we can, we know we must, and we know we are enough
If we focus on the moments passing, peace inside and everlasting
Spreading joy to every voice and ear _ This time of year

(Let the) healing begin right here _ This time of year

Things That Really Matter

by

Steve Trinward

There's no denying _ Things have changed
Since the end of the world we knew, a part of us may never be the same
But it does no good to spend our time
Worrying about what may never come
There's a better way to make it through

Keep on doing the things that really matter
Sharing our love _ Raising our kids _ Teaching them wrong from right
Be strong, doing the things that really matter
Braving the darkness and bringing it into the Light

It's not a question of living in fear
We've been given a wake-up call, can't pretend we're still unaware
(So) find the meaning in the smallest flower
Take a breath of fresh air when you can
Let yourself really live for as long as you're here

And [repeat chorus]

Let's admit that life can be dangerous just in everyday living in the world
Then focus our sights on what we can do

We can [repeat chorus]

Braving the darkness and bringing into the light
All the things that really matter

I Am

by

Steve Trinward

I am a wave on the ocean of life
Sometimes a ripple sometimes more
All that I am is borne on the tide
Reaching out to that distant shore

I am a raindrop part of the flood
Armored in Truth and powered by Love
A being of spirit not just flesh and blood
Like no one ever before

I am a part of the Great
I Am in charge of my Fate
And if anyone is able to see
How I fit into the Plan
I am ... I am

I am a ray in the spectrum of light
Sometimes a glimmer sometimes more
Shining my brilliance with all of my might
Making clear what was dim before

I am a laser steady and true
Focused unbending and serving as proof (that)
Wisdom is only what’s getting you through
All that you need to endure

CHORUS

I am a thought _ Just a piece of the Mind
My freedom is bought with the passing of time

CHORUS _ I am

Living Liberty

by

Steve Trinward

Some people say the American dream has died
Slain on an altar of hatred greed and fear
Some say it’s time to take up arms and fight for what’s left of our rights
Cause Armageddon Time is drawing near

But I think we still have a chance to turn this train around
With some simple ways built on solid ground

Walking in peace, choosing freely,
Hurting no-one along the way
Standing in truth, sharing willingly
Living liberty day by day

Two hundred twenty-some years have come and gone
Since revolution was the watchword in this land
But the dream those patriots cherished seems so much farther away
Than it was in Tom and Sam and Patrick’s hands

We give away our freedom and pretend it makes us safe
Now it’s reached the point I pray it’s not too late

(To be) [chorus]

It’s just do unto others as you’d have them do to you
Live and let live give and let give
‘Cause that’s what you really want to do

(If you’re)
Walking in peace, choosing freely,
Hurting no-one along the way
Standing in truth, sharing willingly
Living liberty _ it's the only way
Living liberty day by day

The Secret

by

Steve Trinward

The secret to walking on water is knowing where all the rocks have been
placed
The secret to getting beyond the fear is staring it right in the face
The secret to loving the work you do is turning that work into play
The secret to having whatever you want is learning to give it away

There's no trick _ no sleight of hand
Nothing all that hard to understand
You don't need a magic wand to make it so
All you need to know

(Is that)

The secret to getting where you want to go is taking each step with a plan
The secret to being all that you can be is doing the best that you can
The secret to finding your own true path is figuring out who you are
The secret to falling in love sweet love is opening all of your heart

Yes, the secret to falling in love sweet love is opening all of your
Daring to follow your
Opening all of your heart

If You Know What's Godd for You

by

Steve Trinward

Well if growing old is just a state of mind
I’ve seen most of the Lower Forty-Eight
Soon I’ll be Alaska _ Hawaii’s not far behind
Seems the years spin faster every turn I take

Well I’ve had my share of lessons even learned about two or three
But here’s the one that’s done the most for me

If you know what’s good for you, ain’t nothing you can’t get through
No river too wide or deep, no mountain too high or steep
‘Cause that still small voice inside won’t take you on a wild-goose ride
So better listen when it tells you to, if you know what’s good for you

(If you’re) Looking for the meaning of your life
Look no further than the dream within your heart
There’s a special knowing way down deep inside
And it will always show you who you really are

So let your steps be guided by love instead of fear
And your destiny will call you loud and clear

(‘Cause) repeat chorus

Some call it God, some call it Spirit
Some say it’s a Higher Self
But that drummer ain’t been keeping time for anybody else

(And) repeat chorus

You'd better listen when it tells you to _ If you know what’s good for you

Tools of the Trade

by

Steve Trinward

Well his phone-number’s stencilled across the side of his dusty blue pickup
truck
It ain't just a casual ride it’s how he makes a buck
Buckets and ladders and sheet-rock screws
Hard hat goggles and steel-toed shoes
Everything in place nothing mislaid
These ain’t toys ... They’re the tools of the trade

He's got a smile and a wave of a welcome hand for everybody he sees
It ain't just good business man it's what his heart believes
Proud of his work and the things he makes
Giving back a little more than he takes
Doing his best to earn every dollar he's paid
It's just common sense ... One of the tools of the trade

And when he pulls in the drive at six every night
A shower a shave and a cold one or two
That'll put him right

(Now)
He's got his sweet lady snuggled against his chest watching their kids on
the floor
It ain't just his time to rest it's what he's really here for
A kiss and a hug and a pat on the head
Read 'em a story tuck 'em in bed
Being a Daddy is turning the work into play
A new set of rules ... A new set of tools of the trade

Yeah being a Daddy you learn something new every day
And little by little He's learning the tools of the trade

My Mountain Valley Home

by

Steve Trinward

The air’s so thick you'd think they'd serve it with a spoon
The haze of pollution leaves a ring around the moon
The garbage makes you wanna hold your breath
Expressway traffic scares you half-to-death

And the only thing that counts is what you’ve done for them today
I walked away _

(To) My Mountain Valley Home
Where a moment lasts all day
Bit of Heaven peace of mind
Where the world goes to unwind
My Mountain Valley Home

The air’s so fresh you'd swear they'd baked it just today
Those crisp April mornings take your breath away
A sprinkling of cedar in the pine
As Autumn leaves linger in your mind

And the people can be counted on for more than just today
I found my Way _

(In) [repeat chorus]

I go back to town now and then to visit my old friends
I can only last a day or two until I must return

(To) My Mountain Valley Home
Where a moment lasts all day
Bit of Heaven peace of mind
I know I can unwind
In My Mountain Valley Home

My Mountain Valley Home

The Land of If Only

by

Steve Trinward

He always settles for second best
More like third or fourth
Takes his life like a pass-fail test ? Nothing more

But deep behind those empty eyes there's a world of make-believe
And anyone would be surprised how easy life can be

In the land of if only
With coulda been mountains and shoulda done rivers that flow to sea
The land of if only
With perfect excuses for all those maybes never gonna be
It's a nice place to visit but nothing can live
In the land of if only

There have been times he was tempted to try
To give this world a chance
Maybe he'd make some wild dream fly ? Or find romance

But all it takes is one bad break and he's scurrying back within
Back to that world that plays by the rules ? the rules made by him

[repeat chorus]

Yes, it's a nice place to visit but nothing can live
In THE LAND OF IF ONLY

The Man In My Life

by

Steve Trinward

From where I stood he looked ten feet tall
Holding my hand walking down Jersey Street
I was eight years old holding that autographed ball
My first baseball game what a birthday treat
I looked up at my Daddy with that smile in his eyes
And when I grew up I hoped I’d be just like
The man in my life

From where I stood he looked like a fool
Storming around and hollering at me
(He said) You’re in my house you’re living by my rules
And my shoulder-hanging hair was all he could see
I looked down on my Father thinking what a waste of time
And I swore right then I never would be like
The man in my life

Well growing up is more than getting farther from the ground
It’s seeing from a different point of view
But the only one you answer to is you

From where I stand I feel ten feet tall
Face in the mirror looking wiser every day
I've learned a lot since I thought I knew it all
I'm finding how to do it my own way
I look at lot like Daddy now and I just have to smile
When I see I’ve been becoming all the while
The man in my life

And it took some time but I’m learning how to like
The man in my life

Somethin’ To DO

by

Steve Trinward

Daddy burned that candle both ends and the middle
Forty-five years same every day
Took all he could handle but it wasn’t no riddle
Had a fam’ly to feed and bills to pay

And weekends weren’t for kickin’ back
Just a couple more laps on the treadmill track
A squeaky step or a leaky roof -- there was always somethin’ to do

(It had)
Somethin’ to do with what he been taught
Somethin’ to do with what he been through
He ain’t satisfied with what he’s got and he don’t believe it’s true
That life is somethin’ to live ... Not somethin’ to do

Daddy’s workin’ days ended and he stepped to the wayside
Sold the house and moved away
Florida winters summers at the lakeside
Life in the slo-o-w lane well-deserved change

But sittin’ and watchin’ those wheels go ‘round
Couldn’t keep his feet from churnin’ ground
Now he’s canin’ chairs and picklin’ cukes - Says it gives him somethin’ to
do

(It’s got) [repeat chorus]

And when it comes his time to walk through Heaven’s door
He won’t feel at home ‘less he knows what he’s there for
So if they wanna keep the peace ... Well Buddy they better find him

[repeat chorus]

Tag: No, He ain’t satisfied with what he’s got and he don’t believe it’s
true
That life is somethin’ to live ...
Not somethin’ to do

Wrapped Around Her Finger

by

Steve Trinward

I sit by this window
The people pass by
Without a sound or a word
My prospects are dim
But my hopes are still high
For that slim chance I'll catch a glimpse of her

The sun reflecting off my face lights up the room
Just like if she were here she would do

I used to be wrapped around her finger
We were together every single day
I used to be wrapped around her finger
Now I'm just a memory she’d rather throw away

The day that he left her
She cried through the night
Mourning what never would be
And now and again
I'd catch her brown eyes
Staring down at her finger and me

Then one day she walked in here and tore me off her hand
"How much for this ring?" she asked the man

[repeat chorus]

With every passing day my glitter fades a little more
Does she feel this tarnished since he walked out that door?

[repeat chorus]

Time's Not the Only One (Who'll Tell)

by

Steve Trinward

Given time
She would’ve figured out
Why you’ve been working late so many nights
All those times
She called when you were out
She must be thinking something isn’t right
She might hear it from a well-intentioned friend
Yes time would have told her in the end

(But) Time’s not the only one who’ll tell
Not with all the ways you give away yourself
One look in your eyes tells it all too well
Time’s not the only one who’ll tell

Over time
I’ve come to realize
She’s still the one you’re holding in your heart
I can’t deny
Can’t hide these tears inside
And pretend we haven’t taken this too far
I love myself too much to live this lie
And leave all the telling to time

(So) [repeat chorus]

Moments treasured
Years thrown away
I won’t stand in second place

(And) [repeat chorus]

Tag: No time’s not the only one who’ll tell

Still Life

by

Steve Trinward

Hair like cornsilk shoulder length
She holds a pale-pink rose
Brushing a lock out of her eyes
Caught in a cover-girl pose

Satin skin playful grin
Just this side of a laugh
Seems so real looks good on paper
Only a photograph

Still life
Frozen in frame
Still life _ Still life

He holds it careful by the edge
Glossy Kodacolor scene
The face remains when he closes his eyes
But the voice has faded to dream

[repeat chorus]

There was a time he held her in his arms
And felt their hearts beat as one
He thought he'd found his forever
'Til forever came undone

He tucks it back into his wallet
Sips his coffee steaming black
Stares in silence at the darkening sky
Knows there’s no going back

[repeat chorus]

He Wasn't There

by

Steve Trinward

I grew up playing soldier till they marched me off to war
And I met a man I’ve never quite forgot
He was like an older brother
He’d been over there before
And I’m still learning from the lessons he taught

And more than once he saved my life from angry fire or mad Marine
When no-one else around seemed to care
And I wonder if I’d ever made it through
If he wasn’t there

(We) were crouching in a foxhole ankle deep in mud
Praying that the shell that had our names
Would pass us over harmless
Or maybe be a dud
When suddenly the world filled up with flames

I woke up an evac tent with tubes and wires surrounding me
They told me I’d be fine but I didn’t care
‘Cause wherever in the world it was he’d gone
He wasn’t there

Twenty years pretend it never happened
Twenty years of nightmares every night
Twenty years of wondering if they got him back alive
Twenty years afraid of what I’d find

Stranded in the Capitol fogbound cancelled flight
Grabbed a cab and headed into town
Jagged scars of grey
On a slab as black as night
Remember 50,000 who went down

I held that book with trembling hands
Ran my finger down the list
Then I fell down on my knees in grateful prayer
That of all the boys whose names were on that Wall
He wasn’t there
