Thunder in the Distance

by

Jaacob Thomas

I sing of Famine amid bountiful harvests-
Granaries bulge with corn ,
while mute , long suffering multitudes wait-
gaunt and wracked with hunger .
Convoys , trundle down highways
bearing grain to distant battlefields
past emaciated , sun-scourged bodies
pathetically huddled ?
beyond starvation?too weak to beg.

Little angels of mercy
?unhonoured and unsung?
glide gently among the dying..
giving surcease ,then
tenderly shut eyes forever?
their faith in God ,
all merciful and infinitely loving,
shaken to the very roots.

Villages ,lie desolate and abandoned -
not a living soul in sight.
Fields once laden with Nature?s bounty-
now ground to arid , blasted earth.

Enormous swathes of ground ...
strewn with rotting corpses and skeletons
of three million dead innocents .

Massive flocks of vultures ,
blotting out the sun -
swoop down to feed
on grisly banquets of carrion.

Jackals, curs and rodents ,in their millions-
rustle through the fields of death
tearing at putrid flesh
crunching through whitened bone .

A monstrous pall of death
blankets the entire land.
The stench of a hell on earth
assails the very heavens

... High in the skies , a faint rumble
pierces the deathly stillness,
as vast armadas tear past -
in swift arrowing flight -
to unleash a maelstrom of death and destruction
on the enemy
lurking beyond the lofty ranges
that loom ,
a faint blue blur on the distant horizon.

With vaulting heart and soaring spirit -

I sing of Man?s boundless Inhumanity to Man
- transcending all else.

The War and beyond ...Part 1- Prelude

The High Altar?. the pinnacle of Empire,
commanding vast forests of unsheathed swords-
blazes incandescent,
impaled in the glare of a million beams?
Beneath it : the Anointed One ?rapt and utterly still ?

Then -swifter than lightning ,he whirls from the Altar -
in an instant , the whole world falls hushed .
Body all a-quiver ... eyes hard as gimlets...
his mailed fist swings up to the skies.
In a voice dark with thunder ,
he flings down the gauntlet-
the echoes resound to the ends of the earth:

?A Holy Crusade to vanquish the infidel hordes?
Our One True Sword shall smash a million scimitars...
Our Holy Cross shall prevail forever ?
And Democracy - our true , living gospel
shall reign supreme- for ever and ever??

The Chosen People ,
keepers of the Divine Flame ?
Beloved of God and Blessed by Mammon-
rally to this clarion call from on high.
Their ?hails? resound, rending the skies,
making the very heavens tremble.

Huddled beyond the pale ,
the poor , downtrodden millions
in utter terror quailing , wait for the axe to fall .

The streets of Empire reverberate
to the tramp of marching legions,
battle standards held aloft ,
flags whipping in the breeze, once again.

The flower of the youth of Empire-
human fighting machines all,
trained to kill and give no quarter,
gripped by a raging thirst for action,
seized by a crazed lust for blood-
strut down to their ships .

The awesome armada of Empire,
slices through towering billows ,
relentlessly bearing down
upon the ancient lands, a world away -
where the millions cower -numbed beyond terror,
the only prayer on their lips -a prayer for the dying?.

..Grieving through His Infinite Agony,
The Christ whispers from the Cross -
? Father forgive them
for they know not what they do...?

The War and Beyond Part 2.

O Anointed One - where is the glory ,
the sanctity ,nay , the nobility of your Crusade ?

In the name of your God,
your armies-
the mightest yet in the annals of Man-
have unleashed the horrors of Armageddon,
on a people so utterly defenseless and so forsaken.

Your monstrous leviathans crush
and grind into the dust
all that lies in their path -
ravaging , despoiling
and laying waste an ancient land..

Your paladins ,soaring the skies above,
whoop through chandelles , and whirl through Immelmans,
as the missiles they fire strike home,
blasting cities , towns ? hamlets - to smithereens,
reducing all to cinder and shards.

Carnage :savage and brutal -
horrific, beyond measure-
has been wreaked on
the aged , the infirm and the innocent

Bodies ,in their thousands,
lie strewn all over the land .
Their life blood -
gushing forth in cataracts,
surging over in torrents-
steeps the blasted earth ?.
to its very core.

Each drop of oil,
O Anointed One,
that your Empire drains out,
shall henceforth be forever stained
with the blood of these glorious martyrs.

?..In His Infinite Compassion
The Christ murmurs to the broken bodies
of the hundred thousand innocents ,
lying limp and lifeless
at the foot of His Cross-
? ?this night you shall be with me
in Paradise.?
