Christopher St

Emma Stockwell

Mother sowed in the light
Of Christoher St
Truth in weeded beds;
Fear laid out in ugly clumps
And unsymmetrical jags and pricks.

Streetlights burn like cave fires
Dripping sticky orange cheer;
St Michael's spire -
Gilt and slate -
Drops dark on Burns' Mausoleum.

Traffic lights determine
(Red, red roses), not deter;
Don't fuck about
The hospital and Dunlop factory glare.
But hope untended grows wild.

The night pours down
Where lovers meet
To dance among the dead
And read the love eternal etched
On cemetery stones and angelwings.
