On Not Letting Go

by

Karen R. Springer

I walked in the woods.
There was no one but me
observing in awe
the elegant fall
of a leaf from a tree.

How graceful she glides
enjoying the ride
giving in as a bride
to the lusts of the gusts
of the breeze.
Flying here/soaring there
in darting demise
from the blue to the skies
to the brown brittle core
of the forest's dark floor
to be with her sisters;
Green Goddess no more.

This delicate drama
whirls fast in my mind,
poignantly sweet;
but I'm more like the pine needle
that clings through winter/through spring
and knows no relief.
Though the harsh autumn wind
whips sharply my grief;
I'm no falling leaf,
just an old Evergreen.

Dowager Amazon

Raped
by Infirmity's merciless hand;
Defamed and disowned
in a pitiless land;
Dismissed with brutal brevity
for her crime of time:longevity.
Fearlessly unflinching
of society's branding;
In life's emotional army,
she's the last soldier standing.
