The Knock

The man stood in the dank hallway
the smell of rotting wood and stale water lingered in the moist air
the door, old and mildewed,
loomed over him
the sound of water moving slowly through the rust-eaten pipes
came from overhead
he stared
at the "13" stenciled on the door
at the termite-eaten holes near the hinges
the sweet smelling flowers in his hand
hung limply at his side
he could taste the musty air
he took a deep breath
then, hesitantly
