real conversation with an imaginary boyfriend

by

Molly Smith

why do you even bother to hangout
with me anyway, i ask
i'm messy with my thoughts
a taurus-gemini cusp; stubborn in my airheadness

he pauses, deep breathes, exhales slowly
because you're interesting...

me? interesting? i'm dull as a pencil
ask all the friends i don't have

because, he insists, you have
to wear that goddamn red wig
everywhere you go!

but it would be so boring
being blond all the time!
what else?

because i believe in chaos, he says
and you believe in everything
god, magic, sex...

no, babe, i say
that is were you err
the only thing i really
believe in anymore
is you

more encounters with an imaginary boyfriend

by

Molly Smith

i flutter around the room
like a wounded mouth
your eyes don't leave me
blue marbles observing my patterns
calling my constellations
sweet names while
gravity binds us together
like bright white string

my skin, your fingers
this hardwood floor
we all seem to be rocking

your head falls heavily to my shoulder
my hair covers you like grass
we melt on the couch, hand in glove

i turn to you and say, "how can two
odd unhappy people dance?"

and you reply,
"easy, just watch my hips!"

"how sweet they are" i purr
"my i kiss them?"

"only if you're good!" you reply

"oh, i'm very, very good
"see how white my teeth are!"
i say, "now answer me this..
will you love me forever or
at least until i tire of you?"

he says "you are a redhot vixen!"

"little old me?" i meow. "i'm positively frumpy.
just look at these shoes! i buy all my clothes at filennes!"

"but i see your inner-vixen! she's there!
she's hot! how old were you... the first time...?"

"17...i was a silly girl... the entire time i stared up at
a picture of mark gonzalez doing a hand-plant
on the wall and worried about my hips,
as wide as gooseneck jugs... when his mother
came home, he kissed me and walked me
to the bus stop, carrying his skateboard in his hands
like a present."

"yes? and what do you think of now?" he asks

"only that our skin together looks like God..."

"good," he says reverently... "then let's worship..."
