Millennium Sonnet

by

Beth Smith

A soporific, swishing sea pounds on the shore,
Musical waves haul back fragmented sand.
The season’s cycle that never can flaw,
The amber-set sun led by Apollo’s own hand,
The moon gleams when night lets settle her shadow.
The wind that carries light over cops and plain,
The blazing fire of life that man doth stoke,
A severe thrashing, beating of steady rain.
That hath no more consistence than the pass of time,
It lets no single place, motionless, lie.
The coming of cruel death giveth no sign,
That the refreshing spring of life will never dry,
Less ruling of the master with merciless cane
Cuts short ambrosial life and leaves nothing reign.
