The Visit

Eddie Smith

His pale green eyes shimmered,
Beneath his beetled brow.
Cold like icy nuggets,
He seemed to know somehow.

"Why do you come?" he did ask,
Through cracked and broken teeth.
I stood silent watching
I could feel his hurt so deep.

He appeared to crumble slightly,
Then a stiffness came to his frame.
Did you know of his suffering?
Is that why you came?

No longer could I stay my tears,
My face was wet with brine.
Never did I know his agony,
But, he was a friend of mine.

I cannot bring him back to life,
Or rekindle his life's flame.
All I know, he was my friend,
That is why I came.
