A Smile

by

Angie Slaymaker

A smile can work wonders, it radiates peace,
Childlike joy and contentment - it can spread and increase.

It feels your will good humor and will cheer up your heart,
Help preserve peace of soul, and induce a good thought.

It can make life seem beautiful, and help you to heed,
Kind and unselfish habits - and inspire a good deed.

If you smile to yourself, you'll forget all you fear,
And you'll bring lots of sunshine to all you come near.

Your smile should be working - God's glory your goal -
You should make it your tool, to help save a soul.

You should smile at the lonely, the timid, the sad,
The young and the old, the good and the bad.

If you smile at another, you'll soon get one back -
Your joy will spread by this one simple act.

You can bring them new life, filled with courage and hope;
Help someone who is discouraged be able to cope.

Your smile can unburden some despairing face
To overcome temptations, and make use of God's grace.

You can show them the joy that with God you can earn,
And help pave the way for a sinner's return.

Your most loving smile to God you should give
In grateful thanksgiving for the life that you live.

Wear a smile for each good thing, each sorrow, each trial -
For whatever he send you, show your faith through your smile.

Be a Friend

by

Angie Slaymaker

Be pleasant and kind,
Keep others in mind,
And friends you will find.

Be warm and caring,
Loving and sharing,
Ever unsparing.

With others be tactful
And always respectful.
Your friends will be thankful.

Be loyal and true,
Tolerance pursue.
It depends on you.

Let's always commend,
Never pretend.
Just be a friend!

Butterflies

by

Angie Slaymaker

Beneath the sapphire, summer sky
They flit among the flowers
Or else they simply flutter by
Enhancing pleasant hours.

They wear a pair of palette wings
Or exquisite design
And hold in perfect symmetry
The patterns they define.

Filigrees of delicate fibers
Form frames for the flimsy cloth
Which covers the wings like a canvas
And keeps the frail creatures aloft.

Colors gleam with bright iridescence
On the backs of the elegant things,
As we celebrate the brief presence
Of beautiful butterfly wings.

Coping

by

Angie Slaymaker

Whenever I find it necessary
To find a new way to cope
I sit with pen and paper
And change the word to hope.

Whenever I've lost someone dear
I find a just reward,
By praying that he's happy
In the arms of our dear lord.

I look for silver linings when
The dark clouds come around,
I concentrate on good things
And try not to sit and frown.

When the thunder in the distance
Promises a storm
I recall the budding roses that
Without rain would lose their form.

Without a little rain to fall
We'd never know of sun,
Without life's little heartaches
We'd never know of fun.

The good and bad would shape one form
We'd never have to cope.
Emotions would be barren,
And so too would be hope.

Dawn

by

Angie Slaymaker

Gently dawn is waking
She wears a gown of gray
She softly tiptoes through the grass
In such a graceful way.

Silently she fills the world
Releasing drops of dew
Refreshing grass and trees alike
To give them life anew.

Her song of silence warms my heart
With happiness and glee
She gives to all a sense of peace
With love unselfishly.

Dare to Dream

by

Angie Slaymaker

Make a wish. Find a dream.
Choose a shooting star.
Let your hopes and spirits soar
High, and free, and far.
Reach for the unreachable.
Stretch to touch the sky.
Know that no dream you treasure
Is too far or very high.
Believe in the impossible,
Then work, and try, and do.
For those who dare to dream
Can make a wish come true.

I'm Free!!

by

Angie Slaymaker

Don't grieve for me for now I'm free.
I'm following the path God has laid for me.

I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to work, or play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way
I found that peace at the close of the day.

If my parting has left a void
Then fill it with remembered joys.

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss
These things I too will often miss.

But not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.

My life's been full, I've savored much
Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.

Lift up your heads and peace to thee
God wanted me now, he set me free.

Joy

by

Angie Slaymaker

There are flowers that bloom for only a day
Without ever questioning why.
Their gift of beauty is freely given
To whoever is passing by.

Each bud that opens to the morning sun
Knows it's part of an eternal plan
Created by God so long ago
When this very world began.

"Time, itself has no meaning to us."
A flower might say to mankind.
"It's the essence of all that you see, feel, and hear
that stays in your heart and in your mind."

Life only can be lived in the moment
All else is just a memory.
So be like the flowers and savor the joy
Of being the best you can be.

Moving Away

by

Angie Slaymaker

We packed everything on the very last day
Tears filled my eyes as we drove away.
As I watched the place I grew up in slowly disappear,
My heart filled with sadness and my mind filled with fear.

When was I headed, where was I now?
Could I survive there? And if so, how?
And now I regret the decision I made.
As my memories of the past begin to fade.

My old friends, my old enemies.
Make me think about my memories.
To the people here that place is unknown.
But I wanna go back.

I wanna go home.

Never Give Up

by

Angie Slaymaker

If you ever feel like quitting
Here's something to think about.
Each day the tide comes in
And each day the tide comes out.

The day never fails to dawn,
And it always turn into night.
The waves never stop lapping she shore
And quitting is not in sight.

Reflect upon this poem
Encouragement it will provide.
For God will guide you day by day
Just as he does the tide.

Silence

by

Angie Slaymaker

Three men sat in silence
To hear a tale of old.
Though each one reasoned differently,
His feelings were not told.

The first man thought within himself
How much he disagreed,
But by his silence two assumed
He thought it true indeed.

The second man, unlike the first,
Believed in every word,
But by his silence, two assumed
He'd doubted all he heard.

The third, however, reasoned thus:
"It matters to me."
And by his silence he presumed
To show his apathy.

By nonetheless, the first man thought
The third felt as he,
While all the time the second knew
With him he would agree.

And not until the silence ceased
And each his views revealed,
Did each one finally comprehend
What silence had concealed.

For silence speaks in many ways
Despite our best intent,
Often sending the very thoughts
Opposed to what we meant.

Silence

by

Angie Slaymaker

Somebody stole the moon last night,
the one you thought I hung.
It's gone away, no where to be found,
and with it went the song I sung.
Somebody took it right out of the sky,
and the only one that ever listened
Disappeared into thin air,
but I still search with eyes that glisten.

Someone flipped an invisible switch,
and the stars lost their light.
It broke my heart to be the one
who had to witness this ugly sight.

If you could find the person who came,
and ended the world for me
I would make them look into the dark sky
and then they would have to see,
That without a star to wish upon,
or a man on the moon to make you smile,
You feel a great hope open up,
and you're falling mile by mile.

You fall into the earth that has no light
to guide you out of the deep tunnel.
You can only wander lost and swirling
like a tornadoes wicked funnel.

But I don't need the light to see
what's written in the sky above.
I don't need to stars to spell out
the name that once spelled love.
I know who stole the moon last night,
it's something I've always knew.
The some one who stole the moon last night,
was no other one than you.

Sounds

by

Angie Slaymaker

Do you ever listen to the sounds into our lives, each new day brings?
Like the breeze that whispers through the trees and the songs the robins sing?

The sound of kittens purring when they climb into your lap,
As they curl up in a little ball, getting ready for a nap.

The sound of roosters crowing and the cooing of a dove,
Are just a few nature sounds. They are sent to us with love.

The sound of children playing can be music to the ear,
Like the gentle sigh you make every time I hold you near.

There are so many other sounds that we hear everyday,
Like the sound of a cheery word to help us on our way.

The sound of gentle rain drops as they beat against the pane,
The sound of your sweet laughter that makes me smile again.

The sounds of your heart smiling as you say to me, "Good Night."
With the sound of your "I love you" that tells me everything's all right.

Sunset

by

Angie Slaymaker

I walk upon the hillside that dips into the sea
And look towards the sun shining brightly over me.
The clouds are floating in the air, playing in the sky
And heavenly hosts of angels sweep down from up high.

An army of brilliant colors battle for the right
Of showing off their glory before the coming of the night.
The sun is dimming ever slowly the light of the day.
And the dark angels are driving the white seraphs away.

A soft glow of red shouts victory at the end
And the last of the seraphs rides away with the wind.
The flutter of black angels' wings echo in the dark
And the flaming arrow of evil has finally found it's mark.

The clouds that were warm and friendly have now become cold
Hiding the light of the moon in their many mysterious folds.
Do not despair! The misery will go away
With the voices of the seraphs and the dawning of the day.

The Ragdoll

by

Angie Slaymaker

The ragdoll layed with the other on the bed
The little girl chose the other instead
The ragdoll looked at itself and knew why
It's body was dirty it was missing an eye

The new doll could wet it even could talk
If it felt so it could get up and walk
Or the doll sitting there just being cute
Was more than the ragdoll had as a mute

But when the new doll broke on its first day
The ragdoll knew nothing that it could say
To ease the frown on the little girl's face
It knew she needed something to embrace

Take me! Oh, Take me! I'm right over here
Down the girl's cheek ran a shimmering tear
The little girl hugged the ragdoll for awhile
Both spirits were lifted on both faces a smile.

Words of Joy

by

Angie Slaymaker

A spoken word can hurt or heal
So keep that in mind, my brother.
Whenever you are tempted to reveal
A tale, or talk about another.

For words that hurt leave some offended
They sting and bring bitter tears
And even after they have mended
The scars may linger on for years.

So It's better to speak words of peace
Of words that lift a heavy load
For many are sad, or seek release
While walking about on life's lonely road.

But if we start each bright new day
With words that don't hurt or sting
Then we find that what a joyful way
That loving others can bring.
