Leaping

by

Michael P. Shopene

I step to the edge looking
down into the abyss spectactular.
I stretch my arms to perpendicular
and feel the cool breeze from above.
So I tilt just enough
and leap outward.
For two quick heartbeats
I float above it all.
Then...
...a rocket downward, accelerating to escape velocity.
Wildly in control
in reckless certainty,
the sky descends above me;
a marbled blue and white edifice to what was.
The frigid silence everywhere,
except for the metronome of blood in my ears.
Phantom caresses of the wind,
slash at me quickly with tiny blades.
Icarus holds no concern for me,
for I have a safety net.
Now...
...here comes the bottom.

The Puzzle

by

Michael P. Shopene

The puzzle has shattered again,
so I fumble for all the pieces once more.
It was almost done,
infinite experiences coalesced into a hard copy,
with all the answers answered.
Here the revelations of a split-second prophet sought to illustrate the
mystery.
All the memories linked together; bedsheets out a high window for the
getaway.
A reason for it all.
But the puzzle is fragile,
and it dies with every new idea.
The pieces metamorphose endlessly,
new ones coming and/or going,
old ones returning for a last hurrah,
If I could just turn off the damn TV, It'd be done.
