A Morning's Observation

by

Karen Setter

It seemed he looked upon them with disdain,
This man wearing the three piece suit
Carrying a gentleman's umbrella.
His gaze appeared flippant yet his eyes
Returned to the men standing next to me,
Unaware they had evoked
A denial in the man wearing the three piece suit
Carrying a gentleman's umbrella.
He looked at them as if to say
"I am nothing like you"
But something in his eyes
Begged for confirmation that did not come.
The faint aroma of this morning's drink
Hung to the bodies of the two men standing next to me
And I wondered if this was why
The other believed himself to be so different.
I looked upon his hands and saw them to be clean;
I looked upon their hands and saw them to be clean;
They weren't so different and I wanted to tell
The man wearing the three piece suit
Carrying a gentleman's umbrella,
But the train stopped and he left quickly
With a glance that was now empty.
