The sound of Death

by

Peter Rowland

Standing in the middle of the field
You can hear so many sounds

Your racing blood
Your beating heart
Your adrenaline rushing

The sounds of running feet
The pounding of horse’s hoofs
The blasts of horns being blown

The shouts of the charging
The screams of the dying
The pleas of those left behind

The clash of steel upon steel
The sickly sound of steel cutting through flesh
The snap of braking bones

The crack of bowstrings
The whistling arrows
The thump of an arrow striking home

Lying upon the ground
The not knowing why
The not knowing how

The numbness of the chest
The pain that never rests
The weakness

Dying upon the battlefield
The realization of my coming death
