In the End

by

James Restivo

In the end there is one...
miraculous, all powerful, timeless
A being the likes of which no one has seen
Has no name, gender, race, class
Just is
Exists only in the minds of those who no longer exist.
Mind bending, puzzling
In the end there is one...
Is he a genious, a slob
A butcher, a baker, a candlestick maker?
Nah, he just is.
Is he flowers that decorate our fields,
the leaves that blow in the wind?
Maybe the wind itself?
Nah, he just is.
Is he dirt, is he dust, or the grass that grows there?
IS he big, is he small, is he a tree or a bird?
Nah, he just is.
In the end there is one...
In the end there is nothing
Except what we have
What we've learned
What we've experienced
What we hold dear
We live our lives blind to the truth, or maybe, blinded by it.
In the end you decide what is and what isn't.
What goes up, what comes down, what was and what will be.
It picks at our brains,
tears at our hearts.
Rips apart our souls
and then...
we die.
In the end there is one...
forever and ever
In the end we exist no longer...
No longer.
