~Hoops~

by

Lyn Patricia Ratzburg

He is lanky, yet his shoulders
Speak of strength. He shoots Hoops
In the paint, the sweat of his dark skin
Sparkles in the sun, shutting out darkness,
That is seen in his eyes. He shoots Hoops
Of trauma, that surrounds his entity
He shoots Hoops. Blocking out life
That encircles him, He shoots Hoops
On the court, redemption from this hell
He shoots Hoops, of crack, speed, guns
And death, He shoots Hoops
Forgetting this war-zone he calls home
He shoots Hoops, his desire to survive
Fear lingers, He shoots Hoops. The tiny flame
That flashes in his eyes, quickly, He shoots Hoops
To avoid the safety of the gangs,
He shoots Hoops, acknowledging also,
That their comfort is death
He shoots Hoops, to live another day
In the paint, He shoots Hoops~
