Monoject

by

Randall Perot

Note:This poem deals with my difficulty in overcoming a heroin addiction and therefore contains some drug-culture slang that should be defined. The word "rig" is used by heroin users to refer to their needle or syringe. The term "Monoject" is a specific type of insulin needle used by addicts.

Everything seems
so insignificant
when you're always
dreaming of dreaming.
People pass,
not holding my mind
for a moment,
Even the thought of sunlight
or a drive through the
warm brightness
seems so
unwholesomely hollow.
It would all be
so much more beautiful
if only my rig was full

A Favorite Pastime
I do love to smile
at undeniable truths,
To probe my sores
With their razor-tips.
The most beautiful truths
Are those most apparent,
Those most sacred
And masked.
Relentless with their
Barbed sharpness,
Gouging wells that flow
With red venom.
(The only ink that
flows through my pen)
And always the
Same words,
The masochistic paradox in
Self-whip hope,
Expectation gun.
And again with the smile.
