HoHum Adulthood

by

Anneliese Ormerod

Jump infant,
Straight into adulthood
For jumping between
is forbidden

No more hopscotch child
No more trees
Only heels, makeup and gel, and please appease
But yell, demand (as a child does)
And it shall be yours
No - not in public :
Stand straight
smile
watch mother
watch father
Copy and be sure
You have that same
boring demeanor
Speak of clothes
of politics
of money
No play time
just straight into real time

Lose your childhood oh child
And mourn late in life
For you jumped
Not in hopscotch
not
down
a
tree
But right into boring, tiresome, ho-hum adulthood
