Requiem for a Tiger

Mary O'Shea

It is a dirty bed to blanket on,
Runny mud trodden
With dog paws, calf hoofs,
Stray cat paws, rabbits and
Pheasants and whatever else
Crosses this fork of laneway
From the main avenue.
The hundred year or so old
Beech tree frowns on passing
Fashions, remains true to its
Perennial act of art and spills
Onto the ground, hundreds of leaves
Beautifying dirty mud
Into a gown of golden brown.
To hell with the designer lifestyle
It has the real secret of longevity
