Thoughts

by

David Mulkey

At times when you look at me
I think thoughts which cannot be
They always come fleetingly
Under your gaze and then flee
Subject, I expect, to reality.

Yet I wonder if I see in your eyes
That such thoughts are no surprise
You easily see through my disguise
As if your thoughts were like spies
Lurking always behind my eyes.

I can only hope that it can be
That you sometimes think of me
And that what I see in your eyes
Is more than just my lonely surmise
Reflecting back to me from your eyes.

The Building

by

David Mulkey

The crane's arm swings above
Another monument to growth.

Architects, bricks, mortar, and sweat
Transforming another natural place
Into a modern edifice of steel and glass
Named for some dead philanthropist.

And lovers who walked quiet paths
Sit on concrete benches surrounded by
Manicured flower beds and progress.
