Forces of Nature

by

Jim Mathrusse

We grow up expecting our lives to provide
bring us to people
that we let inside
Why do we think that life is so sincere
why don't we see
that life must be endured

I wander through the stacks keeping the volumes of me
Maybe someday I could find the secret passage to the sea

Breaking free from the ground
fly far and wide I will
reach that holy land where gravity just stands still
Where the Forces of Nature cannot hold us down
where the Forces of Nature
allow peace all around

Was it the Forces of Nature
that brought me to you
the Forces of Nature
can this really be true

We spend a lifetime of hope to win by making the rules
only to learn that our life doesn't need to be that cruel

It was the Forces of Nature
that led me to the prize
I see the Forces of Nature
when I look into your eyes

Warm Storm

by

Jim Mathrusse

See the clouds gathering
soft, dark pillows in flight
I've always gazed upon them when they mass like this
When the winds are warm they say
the calm is just the beginning
it's the warm storm that brings the most rain

I want to feel the rain all over me
the moist breeze coating my face
let the warm storm bring its due
I can ride the flood water until it brings me to you

The water it makes the noises of life like the clouds several parts in motion
riding the Earth like a runaway train
it's the warm storm that brings the most rain

I like to feel the water pass over me
your flood surrounds me like a dream
Carrying me to a faraway land where the clouds look like a city of their own

The soft warm water crosses my lips as I reach the eye of your storm
I cascade over the rocks without pain
gently finding myself within your arms

The winds have lessened their great fury now
natural balance having now been restored
when the winds are warm they say the calm is just the beginning
the beginning of life
from the warm storm that brings the most rain

Little Wagons

by

Jim Mathrusse

Sometimes when I linger
old pictures blurred in the light
pedal back to the days
when it was just a game
a time of dust and dirt
thirsty tree roots rippling sidewalks
only to be conquered
by our little wagons

It was all in there waiting
a world within its walls
I lived a thousand lifetimes
ruled over magical kingdoms
crossing over and back at will
the mighty weight of knowledge
tempered and tamed
by our little wagons

With each new summer day
another road trip to plan
city streets country roads
looking for fun but really
hoping to get the feeling again
treasures to be discovered
all brought back to camp
by our little wagons

The more that we learn
so easy to lose the feel
how to live without bounds
play the game, read a story, walk the path
and feel the magic around us
Sometimes I want to linger
capture all that my arms will hold
bring it back, all of it
in our little wagons

Angel

by

Jim Mathrusse

Spent a lifetime wandering
always thinking, hoping there was more
must be an Angel on my shoulder
that led me to your door

Don't know how we got here
not sure where this began
life can get so crazy sometimes
but we can change it, you know that we can

Your hand touches me
and I am then complete
my fingers caress you
and I can feel the beat
one heart feeding two
blessed by an Angel
the love between me and you

Where did you come from
it's like passing through a dream
walk with me on this path we follow
and face our future yet so unseen

Spent my lifetime wondering
were stories of love and happiness true
must be an Angel on my shoulder
that somehow let my heart find you

Vegas

by

Jim Mathrusse

So
I'm standing here
Standing on a street corner
fresh pavement not yet worn
worn down by weary feet and
faded dreams
A patch of light gleaming
breaking night's darkness
the city's brightness belies
its dark nature
The true forces of nature
seemingly cloaked by
the neon intensity of man's
yearning
Chased from town
by the sheer weight of
human vanity
It is human nature to seek
light and sound
color and warmth
So
it must be our destiny
to replace nature in our own
image
amongst this apparent desolation
of a desert oasis

Sandals

by

Jim Mathrusse

It was a good day.
The beach was bright, the sand warm, water very cold.
I got wet. I liked it.
The waves kept giving, never asking.
Like a big warm blanket,
the sun welcomed me with big open arms.
I got hot. It felt good.
We stopped at a house with a pool.
The stepping stones had little rocks around them.
It was okay, I had good sandals.
I really liked those sandals.
The water was warm, but quiet.
Nothing lived there.
My skin itched a lot after getting wet again.
I didn't like it.
The chair was good. It stretched out around me.
Like floating in mid-air.
The sun never left me. My blanket waiting.
My mind was still. The winds went home.
For awhile, I didn't even hear the ringing.
My feet were dry now. Even my sandals.
I really liked those sandals.
I really liked the quiet.
It was a good day. Very good.
I liked it.
