When Skin Mattered

by

Amanda Marcus

When skin mattered, there was no peace
for copper to brown-skinned people.
They were beat in the street
because they were born unique.
They were put down for their skin
and not their hearts. Yet today
we judge on knowledge not skin.
Why could they not understand that
so many years ago? Why, because of skin,
did we make fellow men work by beating them?
Why did we tear families apart for our pleasure?
Why did we deny them a right to learn?
Why did we treat fellow men like cattle or sheep?
Why?

Rules of Friendship

by

Amanda Marcus

Here are some rules of friendship
which aren’t really rules at all.
It’s just common courtesy
to help friends not to fall.

First, when you’re mad at someone,
tell them, don’t just keep it in.
It’ll make them wonder
what they did to deserve this pain.

Second, if a friend is sad,
don’t make it worse. Pranks
and jokes can wait until
another time, another place.

Third, and last is the best of all, don’t
let friends feel friendship will fall.
No one is helped when you put them down,
especially, if you nail them in the ground.

Here are some rules of friendship
which aren’t really rules at all.
It’s just common courtesy
to help friends not to fall.

Couger

Mountain lion.
Scopes, watches,
hunting, waiting. Pounces.
Stalks its prey silently.
Couger.

The Tournament

by

Amanda Marcus

Running...
Fleeing, flying, free!
Ball coming at you!
Don't duck, header it! Eeeee!
Dazed but happy,
passing and receiving the ball,
all part of my soccer.
Hope I don't fall!
