Nehalem Passage

by

Dana Paul Laferriere

Deep in the shadows of Nehalem Bay,
is a place where soft lights of summer play.
Where a forest once grew from spirit dreams
when countless salmon swam river streams.

From time of wooden ships in canvas white
and native fires glow through misty light.
Time when two cultures learned each others ways.
Now little trace remain of those fleeting primal days.

But there are perceptions of nature here
that transcend all human fear.
Tranquilies that makes amend
for our vanity and ambitious end.

Watching Gulls and Pipers sweep the air
releases me from temporal care.
And when sun sets in brilliant dress,
Nature's vespers put my world to rest.

Then listen for sound of the jetty bell,
flouncing in the breakers swell.
It's heard above winds refrain,
dancing in moonlight rain.

As I close my eyes awhile in sleep,
holding fast to dreams that love will keep.
The ebb and flow of memories drift on by,
until morning waves roll back the sky.

Then wake to embrace the wild flowers.
Enjoy reverance for life in minute hours.
Follow the path where rabbits run
and catch raindrops falling through shining sun.
