Ode to a Toad

by

Michael Kellermeyer

A toad was a sunnin'
himself by the moat
Warbling his song
in an interesting note
Along came a Princess
so noble and so fair
who gently trapped the little guy
and held him in the air

"Could you be my Prince?",
she asked him with a sigh
The toad took little interest,
rolling up one eye
She pursed her lips, brought him close
and gave his nose a 'smack'
The sun obscured by darkened cloud
and lightnings deafened crack

When it all was ended
and all the smoke had cleared
There seemed to be no Princess
she had simply disappeared
Love always finds a way
into all the land's abodes
and down by the moat,
two tiny toads

It's Only My Love

by

Michael Kellermeyer

If my love were a river
it would have to be the Nile
Winding gently through the desert
lit only by your smile
Pent up feelings behind the Aswan
would come flooding to the plain
when the gates are opened
by the saying of your name

If my love were a planet
Jupiter, it would have to be
in all it’s giant splendor
at highest apogee
Twofold would be it’s meaning
as it burgeons in the sky
You see, it is a gas bag
and, alas, so am I

If my love were an accident
a train wreck would be mine
for , like a drunken driver,
I didn’t heed the sign
Now I’m bits and pieces
scattered on the track
and like poor Humpty Dumpty
they’ll never put me back

But my love is just my love
It’s all inside of me
Although it feels just as huge
as the mountains and the sea
It is me and I am it
it fills me through and through
and freely would I gladly give
all of it to you

Pirate's Don't Wear Pink!

by

Michael Kellermeyer

Avast me mateys,
hearty and rude,
We pirates would never
dress like a dude

We roams the seas
under flags black and white
With foul dispositions,
dark, like the night

We’ll wear yellow sashes
and red feathers, I think,
But one thing I know
Pirates would never wear pink

"Pink is not manly,"
I says with a scowl,
and sip on my grog,
both rancid and foul

"Why if we was
to dress like a dandy,
We’d be boarding those ships
and passin’ out candy!"

They’d laugh at us
and circle their ears
and throw us kisses,
instead of jeers

"Har, me mates
it’s into the drink
With any Pirate
what’s wearin’ pink!"

So shiver me timbers,
I’ll never, I think
Be boarding a ship
and wearing pink!

Frog's Don't Have Bad Hair Days

by

Michael Kellermeyer

Bernaise Frog, That bellicose toad
Was boasting to Hog, Just down the road
"We frogs have the life", He said with a grin,
"Just hopping around, 'till the day is all in"
Lying on lillypads and zapping our lunches,
and playing with tadpoles, who come in great bunches
Not at all like pigs, who stink to high heaven
And root in their slop from morning till seven
Of all of God's creatures, from here to the sea,
By gum all I want is a frog's life for me!"
Hog looked at frog, and rooted some more
And thought to herself "Gosh, what a bore!"
"And one more thing," added Bernaise,
"We frogs don't have bad hair days"
and off he hopped for his pond cross the highway
singing, of course, "I did it my way"
Later that day Hog spotted Bernaise
Out on the road in an awful place
Boasting no more, not a little, not any
left of center, flat as a penny.
