Mask

by

A S Gellatly

I wondered where the shovel was
But all she heard was anger
I told here where it used to be
But she was already closing the door
She did not see me there
Trying so hard to be her man
She would not try to see me there
Trying hard to smile again

Where am I
Where have I been
I wish she would just ask me
Then listen as I reply
But all she hears is anger
Her response is in defense
No longer does she hear me speak
When I whisper, she hears a scream

I want to be her husband
I want to be her man
To love and to hold
Those words were what I spoke
Thru better, thru worse
Can it be much worse than this
I know that we could work it out
But this mask she sees is false

I am not the great pretender
My heart is strong and true
I love her more than living
But she will not look this way
She sees only a mask of frustration
But the mask fell long away
Now I ask her to look again
But she hears not the things I say

There are things in need of doing
But she prefers to play her way
When I ask if itís completed
She frowns and turns away
I want to ensure the comfort
So it is I have to ask
But when she hears me speaking
She hears anger and attack

I wondered where the shovel was
But all she heard was anger
I told here where it used to be
But she was already closing the door
She did not see me there
Trying so hard to be her man
She would not try to see me there
Trying hard to smile again
