The Whale

by

Liara Garbuj

Suddenly, darkness creeps over the ocean floor,
A shadow lurks among the sand and rocks
Overhead, the whale turns in the ice cold water.
She is massive and awesome.
The light from the sun shines through the waves
And hits her back as she surfaces.
A spout of water breaks the air
And splahses down upon the whale.
With a quiet moan, she sinks lower
And joins the others on the ocean floor.
But now she is shadowed
A large vessel blocks the light and brings
Sadness and fear to the whale.
"Thar she blows."
She does not sense that when she surfaces again
The scurrilous men above will steal her future
Unknowingly, she moves through the water
To the light above her.

The Sea

by

Liara Garbuj

My ears are filled with the soft sounds
Of the gulls and the waves and the wind.
My feet are caressed by the powdered sand
Beneath them and between my toes.
My body feels cold in the evening breeze
But my thoughts keep me warm inside.
My eyes see blue and gray and green
And the amber sunset above me.
My nose smells sea-smells and dusty air
And the cool, crisp smells of night.

Dream Haiku

Your eyes close slowly,
It is all so new and bright.
A great adventure,
The alarm is ringing
But you don't want to wake up.
