Butterfly Mountain

by

Denise Fletcher

Take me to a land
where the children play
in sheer delight, running
with shrieks of laughter
following the path of the butterfly
as they instinctively travel
guided by sunlight
on their yearly journey
through the seasons, from egg
to larva, from pupa to butterfly
a kaleidoscope of colors
clustered together in droves
on their endless search
for nectar and a bed of pines

Come fall the butterflies begin
their three-day pilgrimage
moving south with delicate wings
on their way to butterfly mountain
in Mexico’s central valley
pollinating plants along the way
facing rain, cold and drought
fearing loss of habitat
flashing eyespots
attracting a sparkling mate
returning northward each spring
celebrating their annual migration
with a new generation
completing their 3000-mile trek

Coming from far and wide
from the Meadow to the Coast
from the Gulf to the Desert
from the states to the forests
arriving in good company
like waves on butterfly mountain
joined together by the millions
in a noble display
of Blues and Purples
of Browns and Whites
of Coppers and Sulphurs
both Spotted and Painted
as the insects take wing
on their voyage to freedom

The Postman delivers news of
the Giant gathering -
The Convict with her Hairstreak
beside both Common and Great
The Skipper with his West Coast Lady
along with companions Edith and Anna
The Viceroy and California Sister Julia
The Emperor with Lady Vanessa
joins the Admiral wearing his uniform
while escorting the American Lady
on their ascent to butterfly mountain
where Queen Victoria resides
and the Monarch is king
and master of the Milkweed

Take me to a land
where the children play
in sheer delight, running
with shrieks of laughter
following the path of the butterfly
as they instinctively travel
guided by sunlight
on their yearly journey
through the seasons, from egg

a kaleidoscope of colors
clustered together in droves
on their endless search
