Winter's Jewel Box

My diamonds melt in the morning sun,
less than a day after they were spun
from perfect confluence of cold and rain
to dazzle the dawn.

No duchess bedecked with common gems
ever garnered the like of them;
my rubies and sapphires, a prisms' gift,
too soon repented.

Billions and Billions

Combing my wide quarter mile of strand,
100 yards from dune to tide,
I strain to believe
Sagan's flight of fancy,
when he teaches that the cosmos has more stars
than there are grains of sand
on all the beaches of our earth.
Yet this night
I look up to the black sky's reaches
and know he is right.
