I knew a man once,
seeming tall with a soldier's grace
he spoke of war in a far off place
under lonely trees and blackened skies
to this child's awe struck sighs.

I saw him again today walking alone
with only his bottle and
a cane
our eyes met for a moment and
recognition sparked hope in
abject eyes
but I ... I just walked by.

Later that day ...
in the news it came
the death of a hero to winter's cold
I cried then (too late !)
tears of shame and rage
for the death of innocence and
a complacency found in age.
