Walking through the empty house
In summer
In New Hampshire
And the sound of the paino is embedded in the wood
Each note flying up from my footfall on the bare boards
A lifetime of love and hope and joy
Empty now
But wrapped somewhere within
Found whenever a piano key strikes
Or wood meets the sun in glorious days

To recall the sound of rustling paper
In old movies in tones of soft grey
When the heroine opens a letter
The crisp newness
A simple sound
So new
So exquisite
When I was new to the world and even the sound of
rustling paper was a miracle
