The Rusty Nail

by

Greg Dietrich

They're dancing to Berry down at the Rusty Nail
the beer is cold and the air is stale
the women are pretty and the men are men
theres nobody here thats going to pretend
here comes Harry he's holding Mary so close
and John he's there telling off color jokes

Just a party down here at the Nail
where the music is hot and so are the females
I find myself down here every night
just wanting to hold you so very tight
here comes Mr. Mouth and he's got his foot there again
tell me dear are you ready to begin

We can dance all night and watch the dawn
we can get drunk and sing all the songs
take me to fantasy land
take me to the beach and hold my hand

Well they're dancing to Berry at the Rusty Nail
I'm making my way through blazing a trail
you are so pretty my actions I can't defend
I'm asking you if you'll be my friend
here comes some people I used to know
not anymore
I think itstime we head for the door

Hit and Run

by

Greg Dietrich

Standing on the corner
with nothing in sight
I look to the left
I look to the right
proceed on a green light

I feel the impact
metal and flesh
The pain inside me
a caved in chest
the head hits the pavement
as the tires spin away
misfortuine has arrived today

Gone is the driver
gone is his car
how far was I dragged
how far how far

I need to breathe
a crowd gathers round
I feel the pain
and the coldness of the ground

Where is the driver
where has he gone
I hear somebody say
it won't be long

HELP ME HELP ME HELP ME
Somebody
I don't need this pain
I slip into unconciousness
blood down the drain

I'm not ready for the grave
I'm not ready for a wheelchair
I cry out to God
that I don't think this is fair

Where is the driver
where has he gone
I hear somebody say
it won't be long

The Leader

by

Greg Dietrich

Coming out from the desert
him with his band of renegades
the preacher, teacher, leader, lover
all his plans been made

Nineteen sixty nine let him lead your mind
down in Hollywood blood on the door
he screams and yells for more

Sitting in his cell the man who came from heaven and hell
War child he's over sixty now
screams ain't loud anymore
I can feel his presence in the wind
his followers clutching the firing pin
shoot the gun
the battle has just begun

Coming out from the desert
him with his band of renegades
the preacher, teacher, leader, lover
all his plans been made

Adolf Hitler was a mass murderer

down in the desert the promise land
he screams and yells
calls himself the son of man
Revelations it's near the end
the four horseman are about to descend
Jesus Christ the second coming of the Lord
he hid behind a vicious race war

got to get it started
down in Hollywood blood on the door
he screams and yells for more
I can feel his presence in the wind
his followers clutching the firing pin

Scared Stiff

by

Greg Dietrich

Locked in
loaded gun by the bed
Danger in the streets
the news said

Attack gogs
to protect the ground
Fear in the soul
the only sound

Not safe
to walk the streets anymore
Have four locks
on the front door

Barbed wire fence
to keep out uninvited guests

All the possessions engraved
serial numbers all been saved

Carry sidearms
to the car
All the windows
they have bars

Are they to keep the outlaws in
or the outlaws out

There's You

by

Greg Dietrich

There's a smile on your face
there's a ribbon in your hair
there's laughter in your voice
there's beauty in what you wear
there's hope in your heart
there's a glitter in your eye
there's a playful spirit
and a serious side
there's a gentleness in your touch
there's an optimistic view
there's a wonderful style
and a beauty in the things you do

Class Reunion

by

Greg Dietrich

It's been ten years since I've saw most of you
now that we've grown up what do you do

I see that some have managed to survive
some have managed to die
some own their own companies
others work for the minimum wage
some have aged like wine
others the wine has aged
some have raised families of their own
others have managed to keep stoned
some have spent time in jail
some have been jailed in time
some have blown their mind
some have made the world their home
some live inside themselves alone
some have changed in so many ways
some have managed to stay the same
some are on their way to riches
some are on their way to ruin

another five years
another class reunion

Suicide

by

Greg Dietrich

I sit with my back to wall
wonderin' if I'm really alive
people just pass me by
I wonder if it's time to die
Suicide is my one way out
tell me friend whats living all about
I'm alone and thats always been the way
it's useless I know to live another day

there are many lonely people in this world
who are looking for love
but if they find it they don't thin it's enough
you can't help them
death is their only end

I've tried to get along with you all
you know I've tried
but you just go your way
it's time to say goodbye
my mind is full of doubt
listen death is my one way out
I'm alone and that's always been the way
it's useless I know to live another day

I tell you that many people in the world
are in a state of depression
they've got it in their head
that life has no direction
you can't help them
death is their only end

Arsonist

by

Greg Dietrich

Another night
held together by the darkness of uncertainty
the cold misty air
sets the stage for calamity
the dark vacant warehouse
releases smoke from it's roof
the sky opens up with brightness
as the flames reach new heights
the smoke clouds the surrounding area
the sirens sound
as the truck comes with the men
to rescue the piece of real estate
that nobody wants anymore
the night smells of smoke and sweat
the streets hold the debris and pools of water
the job was well done
the building an inferno from hell
the owner cannot be reached
he saw to it
to be out of town
no injuries
no real harm done
just an old building
no longer standing
a useless piece of real estate
another job well done

Fortune Teller

by

Greg Dietrich

Took to the road
to see what lay ahead
went to the fortune teller
and this is what she said

the future's in your hands
make your stand
the future's in your hands
whats your plan

well I didn't have an answer
and I guess she knew
so I thought I'd ask her
what did I have to lose

You're always taking candy from strangers
and you're always looking for danger
you've been kind nd you've been cruel
you've been the wise man and you've been the fool

well I didn't need that
is what I told her
she guessed that
as she got bolder

Are you trying for the other side
did you cross over
and if you did
what shall we call it
suicide or murder

I Want

by

Greg Dietrich

Sunny skies
bird that flies
Saturday afternoon in May

Sweet surprise
beautiful eyes
I want you everyday

Sincerities
I want to believe
in our love always

Hello
remember me
I'm the one
who met you
with the sun
the morning after
the night we spent together

Winter Makes it's way

by

Greg Dietrich

Yesterday the rains came
and you tried to conceal the pain
Remembering all the times
in your mind
and don't look back
for you say
you don't like what you see
and then there's me

Perhaps in time
a different light
we might find ourselves in passion
in the middle of the night

Sometime in the future
maybe you'll realize
what all the past meant
as the people came
and the people went

Let's live our lives today
and hold each other close
as winter makes it's way

Down on my knees

by

Greg Dietrich

Stuck in this dirty ol' hole in the wall
down on my knees beiggin' to crawl
white lady waits for me at the door
can't scrape the snow off the floor
buzzed all night and into the day
rode the horse all the way
darkness comes before the sun
just gonna have to take another run
nature calls me a blind ol' fool
streets my name and it's my school
you know I won't sacrifice to get me by
it's the trip I need to set things right

The Flasher

by

Greg Dietrich

Here comes that little girl
she's walking down the street
I'm really not the person
she'd like to meet
I flash her my smile
and she stares in disbelief
she gets a little wild
and runs away in grief

I put my car in idle
as I pull on down the street
my eye is on that girl
as I duck behind my seat
I call her to the car
and she looks over at me
she really can't believe
what she thinks she sees

She may think its lewd or sick
but it's only a game to me
only to victimize her
with just a little pain
but the joke was on me
when I called her over to see
as she looked over
she started to laugh
she was only laughing at me

Judgement Day

by

Greg Dietrich

They called me in for the Judgement day
and ol' God said what defense are you going to use today
Well I sold porno down at the liquor store
I got the clap from a backstreet whore
I wasted my money on gamblin', whiskey and women
all the good things you call worldly sin
I smoked good dope and broke the law
made my bed and my lovers crawl
Slept in Sunday mornings or watched the TV
practiced what I preached in believing in me

Assassin

by

Greg Dietrich

I want to bec remembered in books, poems and song
I want my name in movies, television stories
my named carved in annals of history
thats where I belong

You
you pursue your dreams
and I'll pursue mine
in some future date
we'll cross paths of time

You're a mesmerizing figure
and you've had all the luck
In my mind I'll take you out
into darkness you'll be stuck

The day turns into night
a long night
the sound of thunder
the smell of smoke
the crumbling of limbs
the gurgling from the throat
the heavy breathing
the gasp for air
the cold icy stare
you'll never awake

so I've reached the point of no return
there is no return from where I've gone
I've got what I wanted
my name to last in verse of song

Time

by

Greg Dietrich

It's the beginning of a new day
making yesterday another memory
can't beat the clock
time won't stop
I think of you
past and present

I remember people
now buried underground
someday I'll be gone
a memory in someone's mind

I had a lady
she was good to me
but then I had to her go
seems I couldn't get tied down
I had too many things to do
I had to keep running around
she wanted to get married
I never thought I could
seems in later days
I never would
so I sent her on her way
I still think of this lady
to this day

Not Worth It

by

Greg Dietrich

You're not worth dying for
you with all your promises of good times
you've set me up wonderfully
only to bring me down

We used to ride together everywhere
I thought I needed your company
but now I'm beginning to see
you were only destroying me

All the time I thought it was comfort
it turned out to be pain and misery
so much of my time was devoted to you
but you always made me to be the fool

No, you're not worth dying for
you're not worth killing for

I used to think I could handle you
but I find out now it's not true
I guess I was another one
that you made out to be the fool

I only hope I can get over you
with a little help from friends
you know you light my fuse
but it will only lead to the end

So Free

by

Greg Dietrich

The wild horse runs across the plains
I look to the sky and see the rain
and the wild horse he runs so free
and that's the way it should be

Another Girl

by

Greg Dietrich

So you look out the window
into the day
and the woman you love
she's gone far away
and in your bed at night
you sleep alone
waiting for her to call
say I'm coming home
but the telephone never rings
and it's been a couple months
and all that you sing
it never caters to your wants
it's kind of hard I know
I've been there myself
but sitting alone
destroys no one but yourself
get out in the world
see what you can find
Another Girl
to be on your mind

Shore

by

Greg Dietrich

Boats on the water
guided by the midnight light
fire in the sky
I thought I should write
I feel I'm sinking down
to the bottom of the sea
remembering the past
of what I used to be
if I had to die
I'd rather do it here
the place that I love
the shadows of my fear

Life passes before my eyes
no matter how hard I try
I can't close my mind
the things I remember most
all the things
I used to boast
I wish that I could take them back

The water is filling the boat
my lungs are filling with smoke
I should get out and swim
but is there a chance to win
morning is breaking
I can hear the sounds from land
can I make it to shore

Broken Marriage

by

Greg Dietrich

We used to be husband and wife
but we never lived as friends
in all the time we've been together
the means justified the end
the words we used "I Love You"
are different words now
I try to look back
to find where we are at and how

When I first saw you
I thought you'd be my girl
did I ask too much of you
to hep me change my world
have we really changed
or have we stayed the same
maybe we were blind when young
or only knew the names

I used to send you flowers
you used to give me pain
I gave you all those hours
to cause emotional drain

We used to lay awake at night
and stare into the dark
we never opened our lives
to each other
only words that barked
why did we ever get together
seems the question now
all the years of fighting
I'm glad we threw in the towel

Strangers

by

Greg Dietrich

You never gave me a chance to explain
you closed your mind
said you might be scared
and run like the wind
things just ain't the same

I didn't want you to think
I was trying to tie you down
I was expessing exaggerated feelings
and once upon a dream

we came together for a time
learned each other's names
now we part as we came
strangers

Wedding

by

Greg Dietrich

Here we stand
united to each other
in the day of remembrance
for years to come
embracing to a future of uncertainty
happiness contained in our hearts
Friends and family
surround us
as we share love

An unshaken vow
a faith in each other
a faith in God
An understanding
brought together
as we plan to share a future
we have become one
but retain our separate identity
I do
I do

So Final

by

Greg Dietrich

Treasure
we've buried treasure
years of wealth
we've put underground

Memories
shared memories
a photo album
stamped in our minds

Warriors
become like warriors
the battles raged
until one had died

I can't speak of death
so final
but here we stand
as we pass in time
