El Valero

by

David Davies

Suddenly there rising
great virgin breast cleave the sky
Sierra Nevada!
I thought of you then
here again where once we loved
strange that this mountain remains
untouched by the time
that ravaged us
And as this day melted
into purple night
as a billion stars
shone their diamond light
I thought of you
and me
and the mountain we couldn't climb

I said
that it wouldn't be pretty
You said
is it something with me
I said you
remind me of a woman
I knew
but not well enough to hold on to

You said
at least we can be friends
With whom?
I asked, not knowing
You said I
was such an arsehole
And I
couldn't argue with that
