A Man Is An Island

by

Eric W. Cook

Who has a person,
if not himself alone?
In a sea of faces one is certain,
that he may call himself a home.

Acquaintences passing constantly.
Friends will follow different paths.
As time consumes so monstrously,
each passing day,
and shows its wrath.

I ask, who is really there, who,
with each days falling sun?
I search vainly to find but few.
While in the end,
there is but one.

"No man is truly alone",
some say so comfortably.
But to reap what we have sewn,
is too great a cost for permanence,
that ever ellusive luxury.

While in the end,
they all shall pass.
Each tiny grain of sand a soul,
within life's hour-glass.
