Mourning Willows

by

Thom Douglas Carlisle

Fur of the Great
White Bear
covered the old womans
shoulders
long weighted downward
from winds of age.
Unrelenting time.

Standing alone beside
a quiet river
beads held gently in
her hand . . .
late afternoon was yet
so very distant
as her grey hair waived
in the dark, virgin
morning.

And then . . .
as a lonely mockingbird
could be heard
singing the ' song of tears '
off in the distance
the old one lay quietly
among the sacred willows . . .
and died.
